On December 8, 2023, Prof. Bai Ziqian, assistant professor of the School of System Design and Intelligent Manufacturing of Southern University of Science and Technology, was invited to attend the sub-forum “Artificial Intelligence Era: Empowerment and Innovation” of the “Private Enterprises Talking Forum” event sponsored by the United Front Work Department of the CPC Shenzhen Municipal Party Committee and hosted by the Shenzhen Industrial Design Association, where a number of entrepreneurs and scholars were invited to share their experiences and talk about the development, in order to promote the accelerated landing of the national strategy, Contribute to the united front power to promote the acceleration of the national strategy and stimulate the development of the private economy.

Prof. Bai Ziqian gave a wonderful speech titled “Design Empowering Technological Innovation”, and personally led the students of Nanshan IV of Southern University of Science and Technology to visit Sino-Finnish Design Park, leading them through the design corridor, perceiving the charm of Sino-Finnish Design Park, and inspiring the future stars of design to take off.

“Focusing on the field of artificial intelligence, innovation empowers enterprise development”

The United Front Work Department of the Shenzhen Municipal Party Committee, based on the needs of private enterprises, gives full play to its advantages and actively links resources, inviting industry experts, scholars and private entrepreneurs to discuss the application cases of AI technology in different fields, and accelerating the application of AI in various industries.

Prof. Bai Ziqian, Assistant Professor of the School of System Design and Intelligent Manufacturing, Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), gave a comprehensive introduction to the wide application of AI technology in the field of design, as well as how design can promote the further development of AI technology. She pointed out that data mining, machine learning, deep learning and other multimodal fusion technologies and natural language processing have been widely used in human-computer interaction systems. Prof. Bai took the example of intelligent touch-illuminated clothing to share in detail. Starting from the design and functional requirements of the garment, she led her students to develop a flexible thin battery. This battery is both bendable and safe, and is fully embedded in the garment to be worn. Through this case, she elaborated how the needs raised by design can drive technological innovation, i.e., design empowers technological progress.

She not only deeply analyzes how design empowers technological innovation from a multi-dimensional, holistic and high-level perspective, but also leads us to appreciate the beauty of design with her unique insights.

The “Private Enterprise Forum” series of activities not only promotes the argumentation of the high-quality development of Shenzhen's private economy, but also provides a platform for all walks of life to gain in-depth insights into future trends. The organizers hope that through this interaction, more enterprises will be guided to seize the opportunity to cooperate with the government and universities to discuss the prospects of the application of artificial intelligence and other new technologies in various industries.

Another highlight of the event was when Prof. Bai Ziqian, Assistant Professor at the School of System Design and Intelligent Manufacturing of Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), personally led the SUSTech Nanshan IV students on a tour of the Sino-Finnish Design Park.

Under the guidance of the instructor, the students went along the design gallery and design lobby to gain an in-depth understanding of the development history and founding concept of Sino-Finnish Design Park, as well as to learn about the design products and thinking of many enterprises in the Design Park and top scholars in the industry, to feel the charm of design, and to inspire the students to look at design with a broader vision, to talk to the world and to show the importance of design.

Then, Prof. Bai led the students to go deep into the interior of the enterprise, focusing on the connotation of the design enterprise. Through careful observation, the students gained a deep understanding of the design concepts of the enterprises and felt the far-reaching impact of design in the actual industry.

In the process of learning from the enterprises, the students were able to appreciate the unique interpretation of design thinking by different enterprises, and see how design is carried through the entire operation of the enterprise. This unique learning experience enabled them to have a deeper understanding of the core value of design and inspired them to think deeply about design thinking, laying a solid foundation for their future careers.

Prof. Bai Ziqian led the students to visit the Design Park, deeply analyzing the design concept and exploring the role of design in the actual industry. This activity not only made the students realize the profound integration of design and enterprise, but also stimulated deep thinking about design thinking. During the practice, they learned a wealth of experience and injected more wisdom and insight into their future path of design.

 

#Summary#

This event not only deepened students' understanding of design and technological innovation, but also inspired them to explore the future design field. Prof. Bai Ziqian's leadership and in-depth explanation expanded the vision of SUSTech students and pointed out the direction for their academic and practical path. The whole event is both a feast of ideas and a practical enlightenment, which builds a richer academic and humanistic exchange platform for the students of SUSTech.
