NexLoop, a project by students and faculty from the School of System Design and Intelligent Manufacturing at Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), has won the Red Dot Award: Design Concept 2024 - Best of the Best. The project was designed by Hongci Hu, a doctoral student in Assistant Professor Ziqian Bai's group.

The award-winning project, NexLoop, is an interactive seamless knitted glove designed for medical and rehabilitation purposes, which provides assisted therapeutic functions by enabling the detection and haptic simulation of the user's hand movements through e-textile technology. The glove integrates capacitive sensors at the knuckles and wrist, and is equipped with fabric electrical stimulation electrodes at the fingertips to provide tactile feedback to the fingertips. Its seamless knit design makes the gloves lightweight, sensitive, stretchable and breathable, and the innovative manufacturing process ensures comfort and functionality. NexLoop” leads the concept and future trend of smart wearable design, and has the prospect of daily applications such as rehabilitation and healthcare. What's more, the design adopts zero-waste sustainable design concept and smart manufacturing technology, which provides the possibility of industrialization of smart wearable fabrics in the future.

Red Dot Design Award (Red Dot Design Award) is an internationally renowned design award organized by Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen, which is regarded as the “Oscar” of the design world. Since its inception in 1955, the Red Dot Design Award has been known for its strict judging criteria and outstanding design quality, covering the three major areas of design concept, product design and communication design. Every year, designers and companies from all over the world submit thousands of entries, and the winning entries not only symbolize the highest quality of design, but also greatly enhance the international reputation of brands and designers, and the ratio of winning the Red Dot Design Concept Award for the best design in 2023 will be about 5 out of 1,000.
